The New Palace is a large baroque building on Stuttgart's main square. It was built in the eighteenth century as the seat of the rulers of Württemberg, and its long yellow front is the backdrop to most pictures of the city. The palace was badly damaged in the Second World War bombing and stood ruined for years, with an argument running about whether to demolish it. In the end it was rebuilt in the 1960s, but the interior was designed anew as government offices rather than a palace. For that reason you cannot normally go inside: the building houses ministries and official offices. Some rooms open on limited occasions or open days, but that is the exception rather than the rule. What you can do is walk the square in front, one of the finest open spaces in the city: two fountains, columns and lawns, where people sit out in summer.
