A landmark of central Shanghai, built in 1955 as the Sino-Soviet Friendship Building, a name many locals still use, in a Russian neoclassical style. A central tower carries a spire that reaches 110.4 m, and it was the tallest building in Shanghai from 1955 until 1988. Its main front, an open courtyard with the tower at its centre, faces Yan'an Road, while a colonnade at the back faces West Nanjing Road, one of the city's best-known shopping streets. It stands on the land of Aili Garden, the largest private garden in Shanghai in the early 20th century, and today its halls host trade fairs and conferences. The outside can be seen free at any time, while the halls open only for events, with tickets set by each fair. The best view is from Yan'an Road, and Jing'an Temple metro station is close by.
