The Singapore Cable Car is a gondola line linking Mount Faber on Singapore's main island with the resort island of Sentosa across Keppel Harbour; its Mount Faber station is about 4 km southwest of Raffles Place in a straight line. It opened on 15 February 1974 as the second aerial ropeway in the world to span a harbour, after Barcelona's, which opened in 1931. The idea was raised in 1968 as part of the development of Mount Faber, and construction began in 1972 at a cost of S$5.8 million. At opening it had 43 cabins. It is a major attraction for its panoramic views of the city centre. Colourful cabins glide on cables over the green forest of Mount Faber, then over the harbour and its ships, with Sentosa's sandy beaches and hotels below. From above, the whole city skyline and port come into view. Visitors ride from Mount Faber or HarbourFront to Sentosa, enjoying the view all the way, and a second line links stations within Sentosa. Sunset is a lovely time to ride.
