The Sinwell Tower is the great round tower of Nuremberg Castle, and the highest point in the old town. Its name in old German means roughly "perfectly round". It was built in the thirteenth century as a defensive tower and the castle's last refuge. The walls are very thick, and the entrance was set high above the ground to make it hard to storm. The conical roof was added in the sixteenth century. The climb is by stairs only — a narrow spiral stone staircase winding upward. The platform at the top is small, but the view takes in the whole roofscape of the old town, its walls and the countryside beyond. The tower is part of the Nuremberg Castle complex and has a small separate ticket, or is included in the combined castle ticket. Ask at the castle desk.

The staircase is spiral, narrow and has a good many steps, with no lift. Moderate for a regular walker, and unsuitable for anyone with mobility difficulties or a fear of tight spaces.
Sometimes. There are different tickets for parts of the castle, and some cover the tower, the well and the museum together. Ask at the castle desk about the combined ticket — it is better value for more than one part.
