A late Gothic house of fourteen eighty-nine on the corner of the square below the Tiergaertnertor, next to the Albrecht Duerer House and on the lane climbing to the castle. It was built by Hans Gruenwald, an armourer, which is why a sandstone Saint George spears his dragon on the corner between the ground and upper floors: he is the patron of knights and of the men who made their armour. The name has nothing to do with the house or the man who built it. From the seventeenth century onwards it was believed that this building marked the start of the Stations of the Cross that Adam Kraft carved along the road from the Tiergaertnertor to the St Johannis cemetery. Since the first station of any Way of the Cross is the house of Pilate, the name stuck to the building and never came off. The city has owned it since nineteen thirty-one, and for decades it stood unrestored, hosting occasional art exhibitions. Since the first of April two thousand and twenty-two it has been leased from the city by the Altstadtfreunde, the old town preservation society, who have begun a full restoration of it and the house next door. During the works it is opened to visitors at weekends as far as the building site allows, and the upper floors give a wide view over the rooftops. Opening is irregular and tied to a specific programme, so do not count on getting in without checking first.
