Yangzhou's loveliest sight, a long narrow lake running about 3.4 kilometres over some 30 hectares; it grew out of the city moats of the Tang dynasty, its banks became the site of estates for senior officials and rich salt merchants under the Qing, and its name spread in the eighteenth century when a poet from Hangzhou compared it with the famous West Lake of his own city, only slimmer. A long causeway shaded by weeping willows follows the lake, with a square terrace at its midpoint crowned by pavilions at the corners; its sights include the Fishing Terrace, where the Qianlong Emperor is said to have loved to fish, the Five-Pavilion Bridge with its yellow roofs, Little Gold Mountain, and the White Dagoba, built after the one in Beijing's Beihai Park. The Twenty-four Bridge is a white arched stone bridge celebrated in classical Chinese poetry, while gardens, pavilions and small islands carpeted with flowers in spring spread around the lake, and small boats carry visitors between the sights. Tickets cost CNY 100 in the busy seasons from March to May and August to October and CNY 60 in the other months; it opens from 6:30 to 18:00, with an evening tour from 18:30 to 22:00, per visitor guides. Early morning in spring is the loveliest time.
