The emblem of central Yangzhou, an octagonal three-storey pavilion 24.25 metres tall under a round pointed roof, built in 1585 by the salt official Cai Shiding on top of the Wenjin Bridge, which then crossed the Wen River beside the prefectural school; it is named after Wenchang, the patron of letters and examinations in Chinese tradition. It burned in 1595 and was rebuilt the next year; in the 1950s the Wen River was filled in and turned into Wenhe Road, burying the old bridge underground while the pavilion stayed standing, and today it rises in the middle of a roundabout ringed by the shopping streets of the city centre. Its ground floor has arched doorways on all four sides beneath tiers of dark roofs; just to the north stands the old Siwang Pavilion and to the west a small Tang-dynasty stone pagoda, and it has served as the starting point of the Yangzhou marathon. Viewing from the street is free, per visitor guides. The evening, when the pavilion is lit, is the loveliest time, and the Crane Mosque is a few minutes' walk away.
