Yangzhou's most important and oldest mosque, counted with the Huaisheng Mosque in Guangzhou, the Qingjing Mosque in Quanzhou and the Phoenix Mosque in Hangzhou among the four best-known old mosques of China's coastal cities; tradition holds that it was founded around 1275 by Puhaddin, the Arab preacher whom tradition names as a sixteenth-generation descendant of the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him. Its name, Xianhe, means «Immortal Crane», and the layout of its buildings is said to resemble a crane; it is also called the «Mosque of Lasting Purity». It was badly damaged in the wars that ended the Yuan dynasty, was rebuilt in 1390 by an Arab preacher named Hasan, renewed again in 1523, and its prayer hall has been restored several times since. It is built in traditional Chinese style, with grey walls, wooden gateways, quiet tree-shaded courtyards and a spacious timber prayer hall, and it holds a small collection of documents on China's ties with Muslim lands; it became a protected national monument in 2019 and is still the main mosque of Yangzhou's Muslims. Visiting is free, per visitor guides; avoid prayer times and dress modestly. Halal restaurants run by Hui Muslims are found around it and near Puhaddin's tomb.
