Sliema is a town on the northeast coast of Malta in the Northern Harbour District, facing the capital Valletta across Marsamxett Harbour, about a kilometre northwest of Valletta in a straight line. It is a major residential and commercial area, a centre for shopping, dining and café life, and the most densely populated town on the island. Its name means «peace» or «comfort». It was once a quiet fishing village, and its population began to grow in 1853. Sliema and the coast up to St. Julian's now form Malta's main coastal resort, with hotels, rocky beaches and water sports. A broad promenade known as the Sliema Front runs along the coast, lined with buildings, hotels and cafés, with a superb view of Valletta's walls and domes across the harbour, especially at sunset and in the blue hour. Visitors walk and jog along the promenade, swim from the rocky beaches and take the short ferry to Valletta. Crowds gather on the front to watch fireworks in August, and evenings are the best time for a stroll.
