A small quarter off Sukhumvit by Nana station, known to Arab travellers as Arab Street, the centre of Bangkok's Arab and Middle Eastern community since the 1980s. Its street and side lanes are full of Arabic signs, Yemeni, Lebanese, Egyptian, Gulf, Turkish and Persian restaurants, shisha cafés, and shops selling sweets, perfume and clothes. Here Arab visitors find what they miss on the road: mandi, kabsa, foul, shawarma and fresh Arabic bread, halal meat almost everywhere, money changers, travel agents and pharmacies where staff speak Arabic, and many mid-range hotels used to Gulf families. A mosque is close by, and the call to prayer carries through the quarter. Wandering is free and restaurants stay open late. The quarter fills after sunset with Arab families and tourists and is at its liveliest in the evening. But note: across Sukhumvit Road lies an adult nightlife area, so families are best keeping to Soi Arab and its lanes. Bangkok's big malls usually have prayer rooms and halal counters in their food courts, so ask at the information desk. It is easy to reach on the BTS Skytrain to Nana station, steps away.
