A passing break rather than a destination. It sits on the direct route between the central station and the city centre, so sit for twenty minutes between activities. If you want a real park in Stuttgart, the Schlossgarten running north toward the river is far larger and finer, and the Wilhelma botanical and zoological garden is the actual destination.

Stuttgart's Stadtgarten is a relatively small green space in a pivotal position: it lies among the buildings of the University of Stuttgart, ringed by faculties and libraries, so it functions in practice as the campus garden though it is entirely public. It dates from the nineteenth century, when it formed part of the belt of gardens that ringed the city centre, then shrank with urban expansion and was damaged in the war. What survives today is a formal garden of mature trees with a small pond, a fountain and lawns, with contemporary sculptures set among the trees. It is emphatically a student space: it fills at midday with people eating lunch on the grass between lectures, and a cafe and restaurant adjoin it. It is not a destination sought for its own sake but a natural rest stop if you are walking between the central station and the Old Castle โ it sits directly on that route.
