The Old Stone Bridge is Prizren's emblem, an arched Ottoman bridge over the Lumbardh River in the middle of the old town, linking Shadërvan square on the left bank with the Saraçhane quarter on the right. Ali Bey built it in the 16th century of finely cut stone bound with lime mortar, in a humped shape that rises in the middle. The bridge once had three arches, the middle one the highest, and was about 30 metres long; today it is 17 metres long, its main arch 10 metres wide and 5 metres high, and its cobbled deck 4.2 metres wide, for pedestrians only. On the night of 17–18 November 1979 a flood swept the whole bridge away, and the people of Prizren rallied to rebuild it, with work beginning on 5 June 1982. The bridge is free and open at all hours, and it is at its best in the evening, when the riverbanks and cafés fill with people and the minaret of the Sinan Pasha Mosque is lit behind it.
