Usually from late November until the twenty-fourth of December. The dates shift slightly each year, so check the official site before booking. Outside that period the square is completely ordinary with no trace of the market.
The stalls sell traditional German food, much of it containing pork or alcohol, so ask before buying. Usually safe choices are cakes, sweets, roasted nuts, potatoes, corn and non-alcoholic drinks. Hot apple juice is a common alternative to mulled wine.
Yes — Dresden has several Christmas markets in the same period, the best known after the Striezelmarkt being one in the Neustadt and a historically themed one near the royal stables. All can be walked between in a single evening.

The Striezelmarkt is Germany's oldest Christmas market, first recorded in 1434. It is held each year on the Altmarkt in central Dresden, usually beginning in late November and running until Christmas Eve on the twenty-fourth of December. Important: the market is entirely seasonal. Anyone coming to Dresden in any other month will find nothing on the square but an ordinary square. In season it fills with wooden stalls selling handicrafts, tree decorations and food, with a huge revolving wooden Christmas pyramid at its centre. Its most famous product is the traditional Stollen cake for which Dresden is known.
