A raised walkway about 2.8 km long across the western part of West Lake, running from Huagang Park in the south to Quyuan Fenghe in the north and separating the inner western lake from the outer lake; it is the best known of the lake's three causeways. The poet Su Shi, known as Su Dongpo, built it in 1089 while governor of Hangzhou, from the silt and weeds he removed when he dredged the lake, and it bears his name. Under the Southern Song it became a busy route for spring outings, and «Spring Dawn on the Su Causeway» is one of the Ten Scenes of West Lake. Walking the causeway is free at any hour; willows and peach trees line both sides, so it is loveliest in early spring when the blossoms open, and in the early morning before the crowds.
