A mountain rising to about 960 metres directly above Brașov, standing behind the old town like a wall of forest. That closeness is what distinguishes it: the mountain is not on the city's edge but immediately above it, and you look up at it from anywhere in the main square. On its slope stands a large sign in white letters reading BRAȘOV in the manner of the Hollywood sign, the city's best-known emblem. From the summit you see the whole of Brașov below: the square, the Black Church, the red roofs of the old town, the modern districts behind and the surrounding mountains. There are two ways up: a cable car from the edge of the old town taking minutes, or marked forest paths taking about an hour on foot, which is free. The mountain is a nature reserve and it genuinely holds brown bears — Romania has the largest brown bear population in Europe outside Russia. Staying on the paths and leaving no food is a matter of safety rather than only of rules. The cable car keeps seasonal hours and can stop for wind or maintenance.

Romania has Europe's largest brown bear population, and Brașov is among the cities bears sometimes enter looking for food in bins. On the mountain the possibility is real but low by day on the used paths. The rules are simple: stay on the path, do not walk after dark, leave no food, and do not approach a bear if you see one.
The cable car takes minutes and suits anyone not wanting the effort or with small children. Walking is about an hour on marked forest paths, free and more enjoyable for anyone reasonably fit. A common choice is up by cable car and down on foot. Check the cable car is running before relying on it.
