A museum and arts centre on the Aristotle University campus in Thessaloniki, established under the will of Nestoras and Aliki Teloglou, who gave their collection and their fortune to the university. The permanent collection covers modern and contemporary Greek art: painting, sculpture and printmaking from the nineteenth century to today, holding work by the most important Greek names. Beside it is a collection of European prints including work by Goya, Picasso and Dalí. What distinguishes the foundation is its temporary exhibition programme, among the most active in northern Greece: large retrospectives and international shows hosted here that reach no other Greek city. Being part of a university means its activity includes talks, concerts and performances, and that its audience is substantially student — the atmosphere is less formal than a conventional museum. Check the programme before going as it may be between exhibitions.

The Aristotle University campus, Thessaloniki
The largest university in Greece and the Balkans, founded in 1925 and teaching about seventy thousand students. Its vast campus lies directly east of central Thessaloniki and forms part of the city's fabric rather than a separate zone. The presence of that many students is what gives Thessaloniki its young character and its nightlife, a tangible difference from Athens.
The Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki and the Museum of Byzantine Culture stand side by side minutes away, and both are first rate: the first holds Macedonian treasures from royal tombs, the second is among the world's finest museums of Byzantine art. And the MOMus photography museum is at the port. All three can be combined in a day with a waterfront walk between them.
