Tigre is a town on the edge of the Paraná Delta, about 28 kilometres north of Buenos Aires and one of the capital's favourite weekend escapes. The delta is a maze of green islands, channels and rivers, its banks lined with wooden houses on stilts, small jetties and restaurants reached only by boat. From the river station, sightseeing boats tour the islands, as do the river buses delta residents use every day, a cheap way to see life on the water. In town, the Puerto de Frutos market sells crafts, furniture and plants on the riverbank, and a riverside promenade watches rowers from the old rowing clubs glide past. Visitors arrive on the Mitre line train from Retiro station in about an hour, or on the Tren de la Costa, which runs along the river. Avoid Sundays if you want calm, when the market and boats are busiest.
