Tivoli is the world's second-oldest operating amusement park (1843) and the first thing Copenhagen's name means to any child: gardens lit by a hundred thousand lamps in the exact city centre, facing the central station โ a wooden roller coaster from 1914 still running on hand brakes, the Moorish-style Nimb palace with its glowing domes, a boating lake, and a pantomime theatre whose curtain is a peacock spreading its tail. Its secret is that it is not only rides: as many world restaurants as attractions, free concerts within the ticket (summer Fridays especially), and genuine flower gardens where the elderly stroll without riding anything โ Walt Disney visited repeatedly and said it was what he wanted Disneyland to be. The seasons change its face entirely: summer gardens and concerts, autumn pumpkins and lanterns, Christmas the most famous Scandinavian market with artificial snow and lights โ a fourth winter season recently added. Go by evening, by verdict: the lights are half the meaning.
