A cable car linking Sarajevo's old town with Mount Trebević. It first opened on 3 May 1959, stopped in 1989 and was completely destroyed during the Bosnian War. It was rebuilt in 2017-2018 and reopened on 6 April 2018. Its 33 modern gondolas can carry up to 1,200 passengers an hour, and the ride takes nine minutes each way, from the lower station in Bistrik near the old town up the mountain, with the whole city opening out beneath the cabins. Trebević is a 1,628-metre mountain that hosted events of the 1984 Sarajevo Winter Olympics and has been a protected area since 9 April 2014. It is Sarajevans' favourite escape for family picnics, walks and mountain biking, with views of the Bjelašnica and Jahorina mountains, and the remains of the Olympic bobsleigh track lie near the upper station. Most of the land mines from the 1990s war have been cleared, so stay on roads and marked trails. A return ticket for foreign visitors costs 30 KM and a one-way ticket 20 KM, according to the local press since December 2023. Operating hours change with the season, so check before you go.
