The oldest surviving madrasa in Central Asia, built by Timur's grandson Ulugh Beg in 1417, the earliest of his three madrasas and a model for many that followed in the region. In his time madrasas were closer to universities, teaching astronomy, mathematics and philosophy alongside religious sciences. It faces the 17th-century Abdulaziz Khan Madrasa, the pair forming what Central Asian architecture calls a «kosh», or double ensemble. Its portal is framed by a tall band of blue and turquoise tiles with geometric patterns and inscriptions, and two storeys of student cells surround the courtyard. The madrasa was renovated under Abdullah Khan II in 1586, when its façade was dressed in patterned tile, and it had 80 student cells in 1841. Today it houses a museum on the history of restoring Bukhara's monuments and is part of the historic centre, a World Heritage Site since 1993. Tickets are about 20,000 som, per visitor guides. It stands near the Toqi Zargaron dome and the Po-i-Kalyan complex.
