Yes, and deliberately so: twenty rooms of manageable size. The rule is Bernini for the first hour, Caravaggio for half the second, and fifteen minutes for the painted ceilings everyone forgets.
Watch the site in the mornings (cancellations are released), or try weekdays away from holidays. Failing that, Bernini is also on show free in Piazza Navona and at Santa Maria della Vittoria.

The greatest collection of Baroque sculpture in the world, in a single villa, with compulsory timed booking: exactly two hours per visitor. The restriction is a blessing โ the rooms stay near-empty, so you stand before Bernini's Apollo and Daphne almost alone while crowds queue elsewhere. The collection was assembled by Cardinal Scipione Borghese in the seventeenth century with a passion bordering on greed (he confiscated a Raphael from a church and jailed a painter who refused to sell). The result is four Berninis at his peak: Apollo and Daphne, where the nymph turns to laurel and her fingers become leaves; the Rape of Proserpina, where Pluto's fingers sink into marble thigh as if into flesh; a taut-faced David; and Aeneas. Upstairs, Caravaggio: six paintings including David with the Head of Goliath โ he painted Goliath's severed head with his own features, a plea for pardon after being sentenced to death. The booking rule is absolute: no tickets at the door, and slots sell out two weeks ahead in season.
