A wooden roller coaster running since 1951 at the Linnanmäki amusement park north of central Helsinki, among the oldest operating coasters in Europe. What distinguishes it is not speed but method: it is of the kind where an operator rides on the train itself and works the brakes by hand throughout, a practice that has almost vanished worldwide. The ride therefore differs slightly each time depending on who is driving it. The structure is entirely timber, maintained and partly replaced every year, and is protected as cultural heritage in Finland. Linnanmäki itself is unusual: it is run by a children's welfare charity, and all its profits have gone to charitable work since it opened in 1950. Entry to the park is free and you pay only for rides — either by individual tickets or a day wristband. That makes it a flexible family option: you can go in, walk around and take in the atmosphere without spending. The park is seasonal, open spring to autumn only.

Yes — going into the park itself is free and you can walk around, take in the atmosphere and eat without buying any ride ticket. You pay only if you want to ride: either individual tickets per ride or an unlimited day wristband. That makes it very flexible with a family who want different things.
From roughly late April to October, with a special period around the end-of-year holidays. Hours differ between peak months and the rest of the season, and some rides close in bad weather or for maintenance. Check the calendar before planning a particular day.
