The largest museum of contemporary art from Africa and its diaspora, opened in 2017 inside historic 1920s grain silos at the V&A Waterfront, and now one of the continent's best-known modern buildings. The British designer Thomas Heatherwick reshaped the silos from within, cutting through their packed concrete tubes to create a soaring atrium shaped like a giant grain of corn that rises to the roof, while the bulging windows of the upper floors glitter like crystal. Galleries spread over several floors show work by contemporary artists from across Africa, painting, sculpture, photography, installations and video, in constantly changing exhibitions, with a sculpture garden on the roof. Tickets are R350 per adult, under-18s go free, and it opens daily from 10 am to 6 pm, with last entry at 5.30 pm, per the museum.
