A former municipal slaughterhouse built in 1933 in Hongkou, north of the Bund, designed by a British architect in poured concrete in a striking Art Deco style; the largest in Shanghai in its day, it stood empty for years before it was restored as a creative complex. Inside are curving stairways, bridged walkways, sloping ramps, huge mushroom-shaped columns and thick walls that give it an eerie industrial air loved by photographers, and today it houses cafés, restaurants, shops, studios and exhibitions. Entry is free, and it is open daily from morning to evening, per visitor guides.
