The great royal tombs (Philip II, his armour and wreath) lie in Vergina's royal museum under the tumulus itself โ an hour's drive west and a stunning underground experience worth its own half-day. The city museum gives context and Derveni โ Vergina gives the king.

The Archaeological Museum is old Macedonia's vault: the kingdom of Philip and Alexander that left these plains to swallow the world โ its summit the Derveni treasures: the giant gilt-bronze Derveni Krater (4th BC), Dionysus and his brides in relief, counted the greatest metal vessel to reach us from all antiquity, ringed by golden oak wreaths and the charred oldest Greek book (the Derveni papyrus). The Macedonian Gold halls file the masks, wreaths and jewellery of royal and noble graves โ a lesson in where world-conquest's spoils go โ and the Roman Thessaloniki hall completes with statue and mosaic. The building itself is a protected modernist monument (Patsas, 1962) โ and it is half the museum morning with its Byzantine neighbour: lead with either, drop neither.
