**The historic seat of the world's oldest university, its walls covered in six thousand carved student coats of arms** — directly behind San Petronio. It was built in **1563** to gather the University of Bologna's scattered faculties into one building, **and remained its seat until 1803**; today it is the **municipal library**. ⚠ **The walls are the astonishment**: some **six thousand coats of arms and inscriptions** of students, teachers and student rectors, carved and painted, **covering the loggias, staircases and ceilings** layer upon layer — **the largest collection of student heraldry anywhere**. ✅ **Its famous room is the Anatomical Theatre**: an entire 17th-century chamber **in spruce**, with tiers around a **marble dissection table**, a carved ceiling, and **two statues of flayed men** carrying the canopy. ⚠ **It was destroyed by bombing in 1944 and rebuilt** from its own original fragments.

**The oldest continuously operating university in the European sense of the word — dated to 1088.** ✅ **The claim**: the **University of Bologna (1088)** is regarded as the oldest institution **still operating** that bears the name *universitas* in the sense that arose in Europe. ⚠ **An important qualification**: **that does not make it the oldest institution of higher learning in history**. **Al-Qarawiyyin in Fez** was founded in **859** and is widely recognised as the oldest degree-granting institution still in operation, **and al-Azhar in Cairo** dates from **970**. **The difference is one of definition, not of date**: the European «university» is a particular institutional form — **a self-governing guild of students or masters** with legal privileges, set curricula and defined degrees. ✅ **What distinguishes Bologna specifically**: it was **a university run by its students** — **the students formed the guild, hired the professors, set their pay** and the length of lectures, and fined them for falling short. **A different model from Paris**, which the masters ran. ✅ **Its first speciality**: **law** — which made it Europe's authority on Roman law.
