A short causeway on West Lake, about a kilometre long, running from the Broken Bridge in the east over the Jindai Bridge to Pinghu Qiuyue by Gushan island in the west; one of the lake's three causeways, it was once paved with white sand and called the White Sand Causeway. It is often confused with the dyke built by the Tang poet Bai Juyi, but that one no longer exists. The causeway has two bridges, the best known being the Broken Bridge, which is not broken, one of the lake's «three oddities» along with the Long Bridge that is not long and Gushan, the «solitary hill» that is not solitary. Walking it is free at any hour, and being shorter than the Su Causeway it suits a quick stroll, especially early in the morning or in the evening when the crowds thin.
