The San Juan de Dios basilica is Granada's chamber of gold: an eighteenth-century church whose Baroque gilded every centimetre until its interior was called Spain's densest church gold — walls, altars and domes glittering like an opened treasury, the audio guide threading through the dazzle the life of its patron: John of God, carer of the sick and founder of modern nursing, buried at its shrine.
