A grand octagonal hall in central Guangzhou, built from 1929 to 1931 with donations from local people and overseas Chinese in memory of Sun Yat-sen, the leading figure of the 1911 revolution that ended imperial rule in China, and designed by the Chinese architect Lu Yanzhi. It stands on the site of the presidential palace Sun Yat-sen used as his government's seat in Guangzhou, and its architecture blends traditional Chinese style, with a curved roof of blue glazed tiles, and modern building techniques. Inside is a 71 m pillarless auditorium seating 3,240 that still hosts concerts and shows, and the building is ringed by manicured gardens, with a statue of Sun Yat-sen before the main entrance. The gardens are free, and the hall costs about CNY 10, 08:00–18:00, per visitor guides; it may close during performances. Yuexiu Park is a short walk north, so combine the two.
