The tomb of Zhao Mo, second king of the Nanyue kingdom, who ruled from 137 to 122 BC; found in 1983 under a hill in central Guangzhou and opened as a museum in 1988, it is one of the most important Han-era tombs in China, its burial goods found complete. A passage leads into the tomb itself, built 20 m deep from about 750 large stones, and the galleries show more than a thousand objects from it: the king's burial suit of jade plaques sewn with silk thread, bronze vessels, seals and jade carvings, revealing the kingdom's links with central China, the south-west, the northern steppe and lands overseas. A second site, the Palace Exhibition Area on Zhongshan 4th Road, shows the remains of the kingdom's palace. The tomb site costs CNY 10 and the palace area is free with a booking; both open Tuesday to Sunday from 9 am to 5.30 pm, last entry 5 pm, closed on Mondays except public holidays. Booking is through the museum's official account or at the ticket office, and the lower burial chamber has limited timed visits not included in the ticket, per the museum's notices.
