Valencia's Fine Arts Museum is Spain's second classical picture gallery after the Prado — and entirely free, which alone is a miracle: a blue-domed baroque palace on the Turia's bank holding the complete Valencian golden school with Spain's first-rank names beside it. Here is Sorolla, the city's son and master of Mediterranean light, with his sails and sun-blazed shores — his rooms alone earn the visit — dramatic Ribera, and originals of Goya, El Greco and Velázquez (his famous self-portrait), plus the gilded Valencian Gothic halls with their glittering panels. It is the perfect midday refuge at zero euros on the Turia gardens' edge by the Serranos bridge — an air-conditioned hour from Gothic gold to Sorolla's light between walking stations.
