The second most important of Jinan's springs after Baotu Spring; its water rises from a flooded limestone cave in a cliff and pours from the mouths of three stone-carved tiger heads into a square pool, then flows into the old city moat, on whose south bank the spring lies. Legend says a black rock once lay in front of the cave, shaped like a black tiger, and the rush of water around it sounded like a tiger's roar, which gave the spring its name; the Ming poet Yan Bizeng described its old layout in a poem. Visitors stroll along the moat walk between the water and the trees to other springs nearby. Visiting is free, as the spring lies on the open moat walk.
