The main square of central Jinan, its name meaning «City of Springs Square», 790 m long and 280 m wide over 22 hectares. Work began in July 1998 and finished in September 1999, and it holds gardens, fountains, promenades and a memorial hall to Shandong's famous figures. At its centre stands the 38.11 m «Spring» monument by the sculptor Wang Tianren, its curving form drawn from the ancient seal-script character for «spring»; it has become the symbol of Jinan, and a musical fountain in the shape of a lotus flower plays nearby. Wandering is free at any hour, and the famous Baotu Spring park lies just to the west, so the two pair easily in one walk.
