A historic mosque in Bukhara, built in 1712 opposite the Ark fortress on the square before it, and part of the Historic Centre of Bukhara World Heritage Site. It served as a Friday mosque. Its famous feature is the 12-metre summer iwan, a hall of twenty columns 42 metres long and 10 wide, carrying a projecting painted wooden roof. The slender painted wooden columns along the front were added in 1917, crowned with colourful muqarnas capitals. The iwan wraps the winter prayer hall on three sides, which has four columns and 18th-century Central Asian decoration. In front of the mosque is an octagonal pool that mirrors the columns and painted ceiling. Entry is free; it is a working mosque, so dress modestly and avoid prayer times. It combines easily with the Ark across the square.
