Guangzhou's largest square, 56 hectares on the city's new central axis in Zhujiang New Town, opened in 2010 just before the Asian Games; its lawns, pools and fountains run south between skyscrapers to the Pearl River, with the Canton Tower rising on the far bank. Around it stand the Guangzhou Opera House, the Guangdong Museum and the Guangzhou Library, and beneath it is a shopping mall linked to the metro and the APM line; in the evening the towers light up in colour, and in November the Guangzhou International Light Festival fills the square with installations. The square is free and open at all times, and it is car- and bike-free, for people on foot only.
