Guangzhou's public library, which moved into its new building on Huacheng Square in Zhujiang New Town, fully opened on 23 June 2013. It stands on the city's new central axis near the Guangdong Museum and the Opera House. Its design follows the idea of «beautiful books»: the façade rises in stepped layers like volumes stacked on one another, and the north and south towers together echo the zigzag Chinese character «zhi». Inside, wide, bright reading floors overlook a tall central atrium. Entry is free, and it is open from 9 am to 9 pm, closed on Wednesdays, per visitor guides; visitors may walk the open floors quietly.
