Guangzhou's central business district on the north bank of the Pearl River, covering 6.44 km². Planning began in 1993, the city's new central axis runs through it, and at its heart lies the broad Huacheng Square, opened before the 2010 Asian Games and stretching about one and a half kilometres to the riverbank. The city's tallest towers line the square, among them the Guangzhou International Finance Center, finished in 2010 at 438.6 m, and the CTF Finance Centre, finished in 2016 and now the tallest building in Guangzhou. Around them stand the Opera House, the Guangdong Museum and the Guangzhou Library, with Canton Tower facing them across the river. Walking the square is free at any hour, and it looks best after sunset, when the towers light up and Canton Tower closes the axis; several metro stations, Zhujiang New Town among them, serve the square.
