The provincial museum of Guangdong, in a modern building opened in May 2010 in Zhujiang New Town, Guangzhou's modern heart, beside Huacheng Square, which looks across the river to the Canton Tower. The box-like building was inspired by Cantonese ivory puzzle balls carved in nested layers, so its galleries are arranged in transparent rings around a four-storey central atrium, linked by a spiral staircase that climbs from the first floor to the top. Its permanent galleries cover the history and culture of Guangdong, natural history and folk arts such as wood carving and ceramics, alongside changing temporary exhibitions bringing treasures and artworks from around the world. Entry is free with advance booking by name and passport number through the museum's WeChat account, Tuesday to Sunday about 09:00–17:00, closed Mondays, per visitor guides. The Guangzhou Opera House is close by, so see both in one visit.
