Casa Número Um, «House Number One», is a historic house in central São Paulo, so called because it was number 1 on the old Rua do Carmo, today's Rua Roberto Simonsen. It is a three-storey townhouse built in the 19th century on the foundations of a 17th-century rammed-earth house whose first recorded owner appears in 1689, later sold to one of the «bandeirante» explorers. In 1855 it became the Ateneu Paulistano school, then was sold to Major Benedito Antônio da Silva, who rebuilt it in masonry as it stands today, one of the last examples of 19th-century urban housing in the city. The city has owned it since the 1970s; it held the municipal historical archive from 1990 to 2000 and is now one of the thirteen historic houses that make up the «Museum of the City of São Paulo». Today it houses the «Casa da Imagem», the city's collection of historic photographs of São Paulo, which opened in 2011 with an exhibition of the photographer Guilherme Gaensly. Entry is usually free from Tuesday to Sunday; check times. It stands just behind the Pateo do Collegio.
