The House of the Eleven Windows is an 18th-century mansion in Belém's original core, known as the «Feliz Lusitânia» complex, next to the Presépio fort. It was built as a weekend residence for Domingos da Costa Bacelar, owner of sugar mills at the mouth of the Guamá River, and in 1768 the government of the captaincy of Grão-Pará bought it for the Royal Military Hospital, after the Italian architect Giuseppe Antonio Landi adapted it. The hospital stayed until the late 19th century, the army then used it for other purposes, and under military rule in the 20th century it was a place where political prisoners were held and tortured. In 2001 the state government launched the «Feliz Lusitânia» project to revive the historic centre, and since 2002 the house has been a cultural space with a contemporary art museum, a restaurant and multi-purpose rooms. Its best feature is the terrace and garden overlooking Guajará Bay, where visitors sit at sunset. Check opening times and exhibition fees, which change with the programme, and combine it with the neighbouring Presépio fort on one visit.
