The Lauro Sodré Palace, also known as the Government Palace, is a public building and palace in Belém's old town, now home to the Pará State Museum. It was designed in the 18th century by the Bolognese architect Antonio Landi, the Portuguese crown's engineer, in the classical Italian style, at the request of the governor of Grão-Pará, as the seat of Portuguese government and the palace of the governors of the State of Grão-Pará and Maranhão. It is also called the «King's Palace», after old rumours that it was built to house King Joseph I and the royal family. The palace is a fine example of the work of Landi, the architect who left his mark on old Belém's churches and palaces, with its symmetrical façade and broad, ornate halls. As the Pará State Museum it hosts visual arts exhibitions and light projections on its façade and shows its historic halls and furniture. It usually opens Tuesday to Sunday for a small fee, with free entry on certain days, so check times, and pair it with the neighbouring Antônio Lemos Palace and the Ver-o-Peso market.
