The Clock Square, officially Praça Siqueira Campos, is a small square on the Ver-o-Peso waterfront in Belém's old town, best known for its huge English clock. It was a vacant lot after an old building was demolished and became known as «Allies' Square», then took the name of Lieutenant Siqueira Campos, one of the soldiers of the Copacabana Fort revolt. The monument at its centre is a clock made in 1930 by the English firm J.W. Benson and donated by the intendant Antônio Faciola; it stands 12 metres tall, is made of iron and has four lamps around the clock face. Because of the Revolution of 1930 the intendant was deposed and could not unveil it himself. The square also has four old iron lampposts made in 1893. The clock has been restored several times, including a 1988 repair that got it running again. The square sits by the famous Ver-o-Peso market, so you pass it on the way there, and it makes a quick photo with the market's façade and boats behind. Go in the morning, when the market is busiest, and keep an eye on belongings.
