The Mestre Dezinho Crafts Centre in Teresina is a space for making and selling the traditional crafts of Piauí, on Praça Pedro II in the city centre. Since 1994 it has borne the name of José Alves de Oliveira, «Mestre Dezinho», one of the state's most important craftsmen, a woodcarver who won national recognition and encouraged many others into the trade, and who died in 2000. The centre occupies a building that was the state military police barracks until 1978, renovated and turned into a crafts centre in the 1980s. Today its workshops and small shops sell Piauí products: wood carvings, pottery, textiles and hammocks, leather and straw goods, and regional sweets. A space in the building's basement tells the history of the military-rule period in the state. Entry is free; it is the place for gifts and an introduction to north-eastern crafts, and pairs with the 4 de Setembro Theatre on the same square.
