The Piauí Museum, «Casa de Odilon Nunes», is a museum created and run by the state government of Piauí in the historic centre of its capital, Teresina. It began in 1934 as a section of the state public archive, moved in 1980 into the townhouse of the old government palace, and since 1999 has carried the name of the historian Odilon Nunes. The building went up in 1859 as a private home, later serving as the government palace and the seat of the state judiciary; it was restored in 1980, its collection arranged by the Joaquim Nabuco Foundation, and it opened as a museum on 22 December 1980. The collection runs through rooms telling Piauí's history across the ages, from the «wet earth» and the first people to the colonial, imperial and republican eras, along with rooms for folk art, radio, heraldry, coins and a painting gallery. The courtyard holds a farm scene and the attic front of Parnaíba's old town hall bearing the imperial coat of arms. Check the hours.
