Praça Pedro II is Teresina's central square and its residents' meeting place for generations. Over its history it has borne several names, among them Praça Aquidabã, Praça da Independência and Praça João Pessoa, until the city fixed its present name in 1936 in honour of Pedro II, Brazil's second emperor. Historic buildings ring the square and together with it form one of the city's best-known postcards: the 4 de Setembro Theatre, opened in 1894, the old Cine Rex, and the «Mestre Dezinho» crafts centre in the former police barracks. The square has shade trees, benches and kiosks and comes alive in the evening, when Teresina's fierce heat eases and people come out to stroll. The square makes a good start for a walk around the city centre; visit in the evening or early morning, as Teresina is one of Brazil's hottest cities. Keep an eye on belongings as anywhere busy.
