The 4 de Setembro Theatre is the most traditional theatre in Teresina, capital of Piauí state in north-east Brazil, opened on 21 April 1894 and seating about 560. It stands on Praça Pedro II in the heart of the city and, with the square and the buildings around it, such as the Cine Rex and the crafts centre, forms one of Teresina's best-known images. With its neoclassical façade and traditional auditorium with balconies, the theatre has been the centre of the state's cultural life for more than a century, staging plays, music, dance and festivals, and it is a symbol of Teresina, founded in 1852 as Brazil's first planned state capital. Performances are ticketed by programme, and the building can be seen from the square at any time, best in the evening when the square fills with people. Pair it with the neighbouring crafts centre to buy traditional Piauí goods.
