A city symbol.
The João Luís Ferreira Metal Bridge crosses the Parnaíba River, linking Teresina, capital of Piauí, with Timon in neighbouring Maranhão; before it, the crossing was made by canoe. It was the first bridge built over the Parnaíba in the state. The bridge opened on 2 December 1939, seventeen years after work began. It was designed by the German engineer Germano Franz and used 702 tonnes of iron. It completed the railway between São Luís and Teresina, linking the capitals of Piauí and Maranhão by train, and is still used by the Teresina metro line that connects the city with neighbouring Timon. On 11 September 2008 the national heritage institute declared it Brazilian cultural heritage, as part of the first integrated listing of a Brazilian state's heritage. Its distinctive iron frame is seen from the riverbanks, and it is one of the city's symbols. It combines well with a walk along the Parnaíba with the modern cable-stayed bridge.
