Aclimação Park is a public leisure area in the Aclimação district of central São Paulo, opened on 16 September 1939 on 112,000 square metres. Its origins go back to 1892, when Carlos Botelho, after years in Paris, created a garden inspired by the city's Jardin d'Acclimatation. Botelho built a dairy farm on the site, the first zoo in São Paulo, the first silo in Latin America and the first riding club in Brazil, with entry through two monumental cast-iron gates. The city bought the land in the 1930s, and the park was listed as heritage in 1986. Today it has a lake of about 70,000 cubic metres, a Japanese garden with a reflecting pool, an acoustic shell, playgrounds and running and walking tracks, and some hundred species of animals, mostly birds, live there. Five to seven thousand people visit at weekends, most of them from the neighbourhood.
