Cachoeira is a historic town on the left bank of the Paraguaçu river in the Recôncavo region of Bahia, about 100 kilometres from Salvador. The national heritage institute listed its architectural and landscape ensemble in 1971, the same year a decree made it a National Monument. Its first settlement grew in the 17th century around the main house of a sugar estate; it became a town in 1693 and flourished most in the 18th and 19th centuries, when most of its buildings went up. It played a part in the independence movement, forming patriotic battalions that included Maria Quitéria, the woman soldier; in 1822 it proclaimed Prince Pedro as regent and became the seat of the provisional government, and it was the seat of government again in 1837 during the Sabinada revolt. The town runs parallel to the river along irregular streets that follow the terrain, with its squares and main buildings on the higher ground and a largely neoclassical look. It makes a walk among colourful houses, ending with a crossing of the iron bridge to São Félix opposite.
