The Hansen Bahia Museum in Cachoeira stands in the house where Ana Nery was born on 13 December 1814, the pioneer of nursing in Brazil and a heroine of the Paraguayan War, who went to the front as a nurse to be near her conscripted sons. The 18th-century house was listed by the national heritage institute in 1941 and passed to the state of Bahia in 1952. It has two floors and an attic, built of mixed stone and brick, with wattle-and-daub partitions inside and a side passage linking the rooms to kitchens in an annex; unusually for its time, its ground floor was a home rather than a shop. The museum shows the work of Hansen Bahia, the German-born woodcut artist who took Bahia as his name and home. His collection is run by a foundation created in 1976 that holds thousands of works and woodblocks, split between this museum and the Fazenda Santa Bárbara in São Félix. Check times before visiting.
